What is Entity?

Entity Theatre e.V. is an English-language, non-profit community theatre company based in Munich for over 25 years. It all began back in 1999 when two British ex-pats founded a group called Entity Theatre Workshop. After finding its footing and exploring theatre in the form of workshops and rehearsals, Entity Theatre held its first performance in 2001. In 2008, Entity was registered as an official “Verein”.
We are a volunteer-driven organisation with an eclectic and diverse group of members from across the globe, united in their inherent passion for theatre. We welcome everyone who enjoys going to the theatre, as well as those who are interested in acting, directing or helping behind the scenes, regardless of origin, background, interests or experience.
We create work across the entire band-width of theatrical possibilities, ranging from traditional play productions to experimental ventures. Beyond this we offer a number of events to build and enhance the Entity community feeling.

Productions

Entity produces shows all year round. Our plays cover a wide range of genres from contemporary comedy and drama to Shakespeare and panto. Each show usually runs for two weeks, with eight to ten performances. We are always looking for stunning actors, aspirational directors, and dedicated production teams to support us both on and off stage.
Our past productions include classic plays by William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Noël Coward and Alan Ayckbourn, as well as more recent plays by the likes of Christopher Durang, Martin McDonagh and many more.

Entity Academy

Our Academy focuses on all workshop events themed around theatrical skills training and development. Course offerings range from acting and character physicality workshops to stage management and technical seminars, and more. Participants get to explore theatre, work on team building, learn new skills and improve their techniques.

Other theatrical activities and social events

Beyond classic plays, we offer playreadings in a relaxed atmosphere. This is not only a fun experience, it also allows us to explore scripts for future production potential.
Another highlight is our annual 24-Hour Theatre Festival, an open theatre competition of short pieces. Participants have exactly 24 hours to create a skit from scratch, based on a briefing on a Friday evening, which will then be performed on Saturday night at the festival.
Members also meet up for social events on a regular basis – outings to a bar or visits to a Christmas market, for example – to connect, socialise and have fun.

FEATS

Since 2003, Entity has been participating in FEATS, the Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies. This annual event is the largest English-language theatre festival on mainland Europe and always takes place at Whitsun, hosted in a different city each year. In 2019, we hosted FEATS in Munich for the first time.
Entity has taken part in the main competition 11 times and has received a number of nominations and awards, including – First Place (2012, Three Nights with Madox), Second Place (2004, Games), Third Place (2017, Numbers), Best Stage Presentation (2008, The Parting), Best Original Script (2014, The Ribbon), Best Actress (2012, Three Nights with Madox; 2023, Wanda’s Visit; 2024, Trifles), Best Actor (2012, Three Nights with Madox), and Stage Management (2024, Trifles).

Other recognition

In 2015 and 2017, Entity received the ICWP 50/50 Applause Award.
In recent years, the work of women playwrights was under-represented in staged theatrical productions, and with a sincere desire to recognise and thank the mainstream theatre companies that were making equal space for the work of women playwrights, the International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP) established the ICWP 50/50 Applause Award in 2012.
